Information

Dr. Phil Winterfeld is a research associate in the Petroleum Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines. He has a B.S. degree from MIT (1976) and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota (1981), both in chemical engineering.  He is working with Professor Yu-Shu Wu and others to develop a comprehensive numerical simulator for modeling processes that would occur during CO2 geological sequestration.  Dr. Winterfeld is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Colorado.
 
Dr. Winterfeld has over twenty-five years of experience in the petroleum industry. He spent a large portion of his career at Marathon Oil Company’s Petroleum Technology Center, formerly located in Littleton, Colorado.  He formulated, coded, and ran numerous production operation simulators including near-wellbore and full-field reservoir models, a transient, multiphase flow wellbore model, and gravel packing and hydraulic fracturing models.  He also carried out full-field reservoir simulation studies on fractured reservoirs, tight gas sands, and gas storage reservoirs while at Marathon and elsewhere.  In addition to his work in production operations, he formulated algorithms and wrote graphical user interfaces to operate experimental apparatuses such as a flow assurance loop, a multiphase flow loop, and an experimental wellbore for studying gravel packing.
 
Besides his work in the petroleum industry, Dr. Winterfeld earned academic certificates in object-oriented programming and computational biology from local universities, and worked for a short time as a process engineer in the energy-related area of cellulosic ethanol and biodiesel production, and coal-fired power plant design.

Research Interests

Numerical simulation, flow and transport phenomena in porous media, and computer software development.
