Greetings from Golden! As I write this, we are headed into finals week for the semester, and that mixed blend of anxiety (exams and term papers) and excitement (winter break) is in the air – I’m sure many of you remember that internal conflict! I’d like to start off this short note by saying that I hope you like our new newsletter format. The plan is to send these out three times a year instead of just once to help you keep more informed about all the great things going on in the department in a timelier manner – so be looking for us to be back in your inbox in the April/May time frame.
Some information for you on the department right now. We currently stand at 142 undergraduate students (up from 126 at this time last year) and 45 graduate students (up from 37). Hiring is strong with outcomes being 100% last year for all three levels of BS, ME/MS, and PhD students (we’re still waiting on this year’s numbers from the Career Center). We also distributed ~$184,000 in scholarships this fall, mostly sponsored by alumni like you, so thank you so much on behalf of our students!!
As you read on, you’ll see some of the exciting things that have been going on in the department this fall semester. We had our 2024 Hall of Fame ceremony on a VERY snowy November 8th, and you’ll be able to read about the inductees and see some of the pictures from the event. Also, we made our annual pilgrimage to SPE ATCE with +70 students – the largest student representation of any university. At ATCE, Mines was extremely well represented at the annual awards banquet with four current or former faculty members receiving major awards!! Information on these recipients and the other adventures in New Orleans are discussed in that article (ok, maybe not all the adventures). We’ve also added in some alumni features.
Please click away and let us know what you think about the new format!
If you have ideas for the newsletter, or are interested in being featured in our Alumni Spotlight, please reach out to Rachel Beal at rachel_beal@mines.edu or petroleum@mines.edu.
