TED STOCKMAR ’43

Ted Stockmar never became an engineer, but he made significant contributions to industry during his 40-year career in natural resources law and to Mines as a leader and benefactor.
Stockmar graduated from Mines in 1943 with a professional degree in petroleum engineering. He played football, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and a colonel in the ROTC Cadet Corps. He also served as president of Tau Beta Pi and Theta Tau honorary societies and participated in the Interfraternity Council, Blue Key and Scabbard and Blade.
After graduation, Stockmar served in World War II as a second lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers, then as a B-24 and B-29 bomber instructor in the Army Air Corps. He crashed five times, leading his son Brian to call him “utterly fearless.”
After earning his law degree at the University of Denver in 1948, he helped build Holme Roberts & Owen, a historic Denver law firm. He became one of the best-known and most important natural resources attorneys in the region. He served in several roles with the Rocky Mountain Oil & Gas Association, the Interstate Oil Compact Commission the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation and other organizations.
Stockmar was dedicated to ensuring Mines’ excellence. He served on the Mines Board of Trustees for 33 years and was board president for ten years. He also helped lead the creation of the Mines Foundation in 1951 and became a prominent fundraiser. He advocated for a mineral economics program and helped develop the Colorado Energy Research Institute as well.
Stockmar received the Mines Medal, Distinguished Achievement Medal and an honorary doctorate of engineering.
He died in 2009.
