Omid Moradian

Research Associate Professor
Joint Appointment in Petroleum Engineering and Civil & Environmental Engineering

Omid Moradian headshotDr. Omid Moradian is a Research Associate Professor at the Colorado School of Mines. He did his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Sherbrooke, Canada and then went to MIT as a postdoctoral associate in the Civil Engineering Department and the Earth Resources Lab (ERL) working on studying fracture processes in rocks and rock discontinuities and associated induced seismicity. He then moved to ETH, Zurich in Switzerland, and served as an oberassitent, equivalent to assistant professor in the US universities, in the Engineering Geology group at the Department of Earth Sciences where he was teaching “Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering”, “Lab Practical of Soil and Rock Mechanics” and “Engineering Geology for Underground Excavations”. He has more than 10 years of academic experience in conducting research on thermo-hydro-chemo- mechanical fracturing processes in rocks and natural fractures and associated induced seismicity for applications such as hydraulic fracturing for oil/gas industry and enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), carbon sequestration, wastewater disposal, and hydrogen storage. He has supervised/co-supervised over 20 undergrads and grade students and has published a book chapter and over 50 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He has won the Institutional Award for Outstanding Graduate Students at the University of Sherbrooke and the best paper award for his paper published in the International Journal of Geomechanics.
